The best anti-chafing product for most people is Megababe Thigh Rescue: NBC Select named it best overall twice, once on a dermatologist-reviewed list and once in a hot-weather test of three sticks. For a budget-friendly stick, Gold Bond Friction Defense is unscented and was NBC's best budget pick. Under the bust, where sweat sits, a fragrance-free gel like Monistat Chafing Relief Powder Gel is easier to wear than a waxy stick.

Chafing is skin irritation from skin rubbing against skin or fabric, and Cleveland Clinic notes that "moisture can make chafing much worse." These six products are designed to reduce friction. We chose them from dermatologist-reviewed lists and the brands' own labels.

  • Just four ingredients: coconut oil, cocoa butter, beeswax and vitamin E oil.
  • The brand says it's waterproof and free from petroleum, parabens and synthetic fragrance. It lists thighs, underarms and sports bra lines as uses.

Keep in mind

  • NBC notes it "may stain fabric" (it's oil-based) and has a cocoa butter scent.

How to choose an anti-chafing product

Best anti-chafing stick, cream, gel or powder?

  • Sticks (Megababe, Squirrel's Nut Butter, Body Glide, Gold Bond) are the easiest for thighs. They glide on without touching your hands.
  • Gels (Monistat) dry clear, which suits skin under a bra.
  • Lotion-to-powder creams (Happy Curves) aim to do two jobs at once: glide and absorb.
  • Powders absorb moisture but don't add glide on their own. Dermatologist Dr. Shari Marchbein told NBC Select that "the cream can work as a barrier and the powder, in turn, can work to absorb excess moisture." So use them together, cream first.

Anti-chafing cream for thighs

Thighs need glide that lasts. Megababe and Squirrel's Nut Butter came out ahead in NBC's heat test. The AAD also suggests plain petroleum jelly on "problem areas, such as the feet or thighs" (AAD).

Under-breast chafing

Cleveland Clinic notes that "the skin under your breasts can also chafe," and that moisture makes it worse. Pick something that dries down (Monistat, Happy Curves) and apply it to clean, dry skin before your bra. For odor too, a whole body deodorant works there; Dove's Anti-Chafe Stick does both jobs, but Dove says to keep it off private parts. For the full routine, see how to stop under-boob sweat.

Fragrance-free anti-chafing picks

If scent bothers your skin, start with Monistat, which the brand says is fragrance-free, or Gold Bond, which is unscented. Squirrel's Nut Butter has no synthetic fragrance, but NBC notes its natural cocoa butter scent. Megababe, Body Glide and the Happy Curves versions on Amazon all have some scent. More gentle picks are on our sensitive skin page.

Fabric matters too

Cleveland Clinic advises moisture-wicking fabrics over cotton for activity. Chiu told NBC that breathable fabrics "help you keep cool and dry, decreasing the sweat that can cause chafing." Dermatologist Dr. Hadley King adds that "wet skin can make chafing worse."

FAQs

How do you prevent thigh chafing?

Put a stick or balm on clean, dry thighs before you dress, and reapply on long or hot days. Cleveland Clinic also suggests clothes that fit well and moisture-wicking fabric.

Is powder or cream better for chafing?

Both, together. Marchbein's advice is a cream for the barrier and a powder to absorb moisture. Powder alone doesn't add glide.

What helps chafing under the breasts?

Keep the area clean and dry, wear a supportive bra in a breathable fabric, and use a product that dries down, like a gel or lotion-to-powder cream. Our under-boob sweat guide has the full routine.

Can I use deodorant for chafing?

Some whole body deodorants are designed to reduce friction too, like Dove's Anti-Chafe Stick and Hume's balm. Regular underarm deodorant isn't made for thighs or skin folds. See our best whole body deodorant picks.

When should I see a doctor about chafing?

Cleveland Clinic says to call your healthcare provider "if chafing symptoms don't get better within a few days or get worse."

Pick the format that fits the spot, apply it to dry skin before you dress, and pack it for later in the day.
